Like all great businesses, it came from a need. One Friday evening, Queila Doyle’s husband surprised her with a trip to Rome scheduled the following morning. She, of course, wanted to get her hair and nails done. However, it was already past 7:00 P.M. and most of the salons were closed.

She also needed to pack her bags so her time was limited. At that very moment, she knew that what she really needed was an expert who offers home services at a time that is convenient for her. Her business, My Beauty Squad, was born.

The idea was very simple but it answered to a specific, ambitious need! In fact, they have provided more than 5,000 beauty services in the UK and Ireland without owning a single hair salon. In 2018, My Beauty Squad won the Best Modern Spa in Europe title.

Today, we welcome Queila Doyle to The After Six Club’s Ambitious Tribe.


I’ve been passionate about beauty my whole life and I love how the industry is so fun and diverse. I wanted a business name that was fun, yet simple and easy to understand what we are about. My Beauty Squad was established on December 31, 2016.

We are a mobile beauty brand and community with expert beauticians who offer convenience by bringing the salon to your home, office, or hotel. My Beauty Squad also offers expert beauty advice, beauty tutorials, podcasts, and a blog. We have an online business but our headquarter is in London. We have a private office.

What do you believe makes your business stand out?
We are the only company created by beauticians and focused on their wellbeing. Every member of our HQ team has worked as a beauty therapist. They help us understand our beauticians. This ensures that our team can give our clients unrivaled service and customer experience.

Is it always necessary to be passionate about what your business is about in order for it to succeed?
If you are not passionate about what you do, you might as well give up now.

How did you obtain capital? Were there investors?
I self-funded the business for the first two years until the company obtained enough growth to give me the confidence and proof of concept in order to find an investor. To encourage them, I focused on our company growth and the vision that we wanted to after.

The other key thing was passion. It was clear from the meetings that I had so much passion for the business and the industry. Failure is not an option and my investor could see that in me.

How did you build your customer base? What form of marketing has been most effective for you so far?
First and foremost, the most important thing is ensuring a perfect, seamless service. My customer base has thrived through engaging with our clients and giving them a wonderful experience—from helpful members of the team dealing with their questions to friendly, talented beauticians making all our clients feel like a VIP. We also engage with clients continually through social media and invest heavily in SEO to ensure our clients can find us online.

How do you generate new ideas for your business’ growth?
We have a great central team and we are always looking at where there are gaps in the market and how we can improve on these. We are one big family and our beauticians are always keen to share ideas too.

What kind of company culture are you implementing? What are your core values?
Our core values as a company are very simple. We want to change the beauty industry for the better by looking after our beauticians, through a fun, easy going, family feel. We want our beauticians to know and feel that they are our priority and that they are appreciated. Take care of your team and they will take care of your company.

How do you deal with major mishaps?
Unfortunately, like in any business, no matter how much you plan, a mishap can happen. The key to dealing with this is to take a step back, not panic, and think of an alternative solution. Everything can be figured out. I don’t look at issues as big mistakes. I look at them as lessons to be learned.

What skills do you believe are necessary in handling a business?
Risk-taking, passion, leadership, organization, patience, and unflagging determination to succeed.

What would you say are some dos and don’ts in starting one?
Do have the right people around. Definitely, don’t think too much. Realize that there is never a perfect time to start and you will never have all the answers.

Was there ever a time you felt afraid that this might not work? How did you manage this fear?
I think every entrepreneur has this fear to some degree. A little bit of fear is healthy. It keeps you on your toes and focused on how to improve.

Describe a typical day for you.
I am not a morning person. I like to have a good eight hours of sleep every day. As soon as I wake up, I check my business emails. After that, I get ready for the office while listening to a motivational podcast.

I arrive at my office around 9:00 A.M. and I like to chat with the team about what projects we are working on. We normally have lunch at the same time, a lot of laughter, and then get back at work until about 5:00 or 6:00 P.M.
At night, I like to exercise for at least 30 minutes, spend phone-free time with my dog Lola. I often have a glass of wine and discuss business ideas with my husband.

How many hours of work a day do you put in? How many days per week?
When I’m not physically at the office, I am still thinking about it, so I work around 10 to 15 hours a day. However, I have learned to switch off by having an excellent team in our office.

What is your greatest fear?
Dying without living. A lot of people waste their lives only to regret later for not following their dreams.

What sacrifices have you had to make to get here?
I spent two years without seeing my family who lives in Brazil in order to put money in the business. I’ve also sacrificed holidays, parties, friends, even healthy eating as to order takeaway was quicker than waste business time cooking. I am now focusing on getting back to healthy eating.

What can you consider is your greatest success?
I consider everything as a success. Every day that I come to the office and see my team, that is a great success considering I started the business in my living room.

What would you say is the secret to success?
To love what to do and to have a bigger purpose. If your business is only there to make money, you will never understand the true meaning of success.

What is your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
The freedom. You can live an exciting life and inspire others to do the same.

What motivates you? Who has been your greatest inspiration?
What motivates me the most are entrepreneurs that made a real impact in other peoples lives. I love people who use their business not only to build a great life for themselves but to also inspire others, treat their workers fairly, and help those in need. People like Mark Cuban, Barbara Cocoran, and Oprah. And I love Serena William’s determination.

Where do you see yourself and your business in 10 years?
I see my business in other cities and countries and being a major beauty trendsetter. I will definitely be starting my own venture capitalist company.

Do you consider yourself an ambitious person?
Yes! Because I am a strong believer we came into the world to live our best life.

Do you think being ambitious helps you in business? How?
Yes, ambition helps you to reveal your true potential. If you don’t think big, you will settle after your first win.

What piece of advice can you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Don’t think too much, work hard, and just get started. If you are too comfortable in the beginning is because you are not pushing hard enough. Believe in yourself and always believe you can go bigger and better. I live by this quote from T.S. Eliot: “If you aren’t in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?”
